NUCLEOTIDES: PURE CELL FUEL FOR THE HORSE'S BODY

What are nucleotides

Nucleotides are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye, but only with the aid of an electron microscope. They are tiny building blocks in the horse's body with a huge impact. This is because the life requirement for all organisms is the constant formation of new body cells. Millions of body cells die every day and must be constantly replaced by new cells. Before a cell can replicate (double itself), all its contents must first be duplicated, i.e. the DNA (genetic information) must first be duplicated. This is where nucleotides, as building blocks of the nucleic acids DNA and RNA, play an essential role. Without sufficient nucleotides in the correct ratio, duplication of the body's cells cannot take place. DNA and RNA are composed of five different nucleotides. The nucleotides themselves consist of a type of sugar (pentose), a phosphoric acid residue and one of the five nucleobases adenine, guanine, thymine, cytosine or uracil.

But nucleotides also have an important function outside DNA and RNA. Probably the best-known function is that of the energy carrier ATP (adenosine triphopshate). Almost all vital cellular processes depend on the provision of energy by ATP. In other words - no cell in the body could function without nucleotides. To restore the function of the organism after illness or injury, a tremendous amount of building blocks and energy is required. One must consider that the construction of a single body cell alone requires around three billion nucleotides. In the case of a lack of nucleotides, this task cannot be accomplished and functional disturbances occur in the delicate balance of the organism. In order to keep the entire organism alive, the available quantity of nucleotides is divided in such a way that, for example, energy is first provided to cope with an acute stress situation before the body provides nucleotides (energy and building materials) to heal an injury. This leads to impaired wound healing or increased susceptibility to infections not only in animals but also in humans during times of increased stress.

TASKS OF THE NUCLEOTIDES IN THE BODY

  • Form the building instructions for every living thing: DNA, RNA
  • Indispensable energy carrier in cell metabolism
  • As a building block of synthesis products in new cell formation, reproduction and repair processes
  • As parts of coenzymes: Crucial for the course of various chemical reactions necessary
  • Regulation of the activity of enzymes
  • In protein synthesis, nucleotides are needed to form proteins from amino acids. The sequence of nucleotides in the DNA determines which protein is formed.

ARE NUCLEOTIDES PART OF THE HORSE'S NATURAL DIET?

YES! Nucleotides are a natural component of every food. They are found in varying quantities in almost all cells. Animal tissue is particularly rich in nucleotides, especially the liver. The percentage of nucleotides in plant food is significantly lower and requires several digestive steps before the nucleotides are available to the organism. This is due to the fact that the nucleotides ingested with the food are usually present as so-called polymeric nucleic acids (many individual nucleotides bound together). After the horse has roughly chopped up the feed while eating, the cell walls have been broken down in the digestive tract and the nucleotide-rich cell nucleus is exposed, the polymeric nucleotides are broken down and can be absorbed in the intestine. However, this processing is very time and energy consuming.

Despite the expense, healthy animals can absorb nucleotides in sufficient quantities from the feed or recycle them from dead body cells (salvage pathway). The re-synthesis of nucleotides in the body is also possible, albeit to a limited extent. However, not all body tissues are able to carry out a new synthesis and, in addition, the so-called "de novo synthesis" is extremely energy-intensive. Tissue types that cannot re-synthesize nucleotides on their own are particularly dependent on nucleotides ingested with food.

These include: Cells of the intestinal mucosa, brain, and white and red blood cells (lymphocytes, erythrocytes and leukocytes).

WHEN DOES THE HORSE NEED THE SUPPORT OF LUDGERS N GOLDFEVER NUCLEOTIDE | IMMUNE

If the body is heavily stressed by infections, illness, increased workload or similar, it has an increased need for new body cells anyway. In addition, the life span of the body's cells is reduced by stress (including psychological stress) in any form. In these times, the need for nucleotides increases enormously, especially in organs with a high cell division rate.

Increased nucleotide demand

Illness, convalescence, muscle build-up, growth, pregnancy, change of coat, heavy physical strain, stressful situations such as change of stable, integration into herd or longer transportation

Tissue with high nucleotide demand

Especially tissues that have a high energy demand need nucleotides in sufficient quantities: intestine, liver, immune system, musculature and the nervous system.

One could now argue to simply give more feed in times of increased need to cover this need. Unfortunately, it is not that easy. Quite the contrary. The feed ration of injured horses is usually reduced in order to avoid weight gain or not to increase the temperament too much. Especially severely ill or stressed animals often eat very poorly, which leads to a further deterioration of the general condition. Here, supplementing the feed ration with highly concentrated purified and balanced nucleotides would be highly useful and beneficial. These are absorbed very quickly and without energy expenditure for conversion processes and made available to the organism.

EFFECTS OF NUCLEOTIDE SUPPLEMENTATION

Effect of nucleotide addition Significance for the organism
Digestion / gastrointestinal tract Improves intestinal structure and flora, pH stabilization, toxin binding (neutralization of toxins). higher digestibility of ingested feed, lower liver load
Immune system Activation of natural killer cells, macrophages, lymphocytes and accelerated antibody formation. better defense against pathogens, lower susceptibility to infections, accelerated wound healing and convalescence
Performance / Protein Metabolism Improvement of muscle building and metabolism, better energy supply (ATP metabolism), optimization of red blood cell formation
better oxygen supply, reduced lactate formation, increased performance and faster recovery after maximum load, improvement of general well-being
Metabolism /Growth Improved enzyme activity and cell metabolism, accelerated DNA and RNA synthesis Faster detoxification of metabolic products, improved cell regeneration
Liver Faster renewal of liver cells Improved digestion and detoxification, especially for stressed animals

FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE

However, not only the amount of nucleotides is decisive for their effect. As already mentioned, there are 5 different nucleotides and science is now well advanced in researching the different modes of action. Through a sensible combination of the individual nucleotides in different quantities, various body functions can be supported in a targeted manner. The composition differs not only according to the desired effect but also in which species it is to be used. In humans, there are already effective dietary supplements which are used, for example, in neurology to promote the healing of injured nerves. These, in turn, contain a completely different composition than in the diet of newborns. This is also referred to as balanced nucleotide mixtures. This is exactly where most nucleotide products for horses differ. A nucleotide mixture specially adapted to support the immune system and metabolism is contained in the supplementary feed Ludgers N Goldfever NUKLEOTID | IMMUN.

What else is in it?

The balanced nucleotide product is complemented by the prebiotic effect of the high content of mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and the proven immunomodulating effect of the contained beta-glucans.
